Gahagan & Howe City Express, San Francisco, (5c) Black (70L3). Vertical strip of three and single, canceled to order with the "San Francisco Letter Express" horse and rider handstamp.
Four margins. Very fine.

1851 gold on black glazed letter book, Thompson & Hitchcock imprint, printed by Nesbitt & Co.
A wonderful and rare written book, with wear and fragile cover. Fine and rare.
Holladay Overland Mail and Express Company printed frank on 1864 3¢ pink entire to Independence, Missouri, entered the mails with "Leavenworth, Kan." cds and carried by outside the mails from Virginia City to Salt Lake City and then east on the Central Overland Route. With Holladay double circle handstamp.
Wells Fargo & Co. California and Atlantic Express red printed frank with 1861 1c on 10c Yellow Green entire (U40) to San Fransisco. Black Aug 2 New York 1862 cds.
Original gum, heavy vertical crease.
Very nice appearance, minor thin. Scarce.
With a PF Cert which states, "UNUSED OG,HORIZONTAL PAIR, IMPERFORATE VERTICALLY. AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT: IT IS GENUITINE PREVIOUSLY HINGED"
